Connection, Culture & Celebration: Capturing Stories with Bush Medijina

GEMCO Community News newsletter showing article about Bush Medijina collaboration on Groote Eylandt with Lauren capturing stories.

Recently, I had the privilege of joining the ladies of Bush Medijina on Groote Eylandt. The goal? To capture authentic storytelling through video and photography for their social media and marketing. What unfolded was so much more than a project — it was a profound experience of connection, culture and celebration.

Over three days, we travelled together to Top Crossing and Mud Cod Bay. Between spear making, catching stingrays and sharing lunch on Country, I was reminded of the richness that comes from embracing tradition and community. Each activity was an opportunity to listen, learn and document the stories that make Bush Medijina unique.

Highlights from our time together

  • Cultural immersion: Learning to make a traditional spear and seeing how these skills are passed down through generations was humbling and awe‑inspiring.
  • Shared meals on Country: Eating together under the open sky, with laughter and conversation flowing, felt like being welcomed into a family.
  • Powerful storytelling: Watching the women speak about their remote‑community business and the impact of their products on the wider world deepened my appreciation for their mission and resilien

Strong partnerships like this one allow us to amplify Indigenous voices and celebrate the beauty of First Nations culture. I’m grateful to Amanda Healy, Director of Kirrikin, for making the connection, and to the Bush Medijina team for trusting me with their stories. Together, we’re building a future rooted in culture and collaboration.
